We celebrate the wide array of SIL students’ talents. From elite athletes and dancers to young entrepreneurs, from musicians and filmmakers to artists in every medium, these young adults are not only pursuing school but concurrently developing apps, working in elementary classrooms, building non-profit organizations, publishing books, volunteering in local soup kitchens, and inventing their own ways to change the world today. At SIL, students harness their talents, broaden their understanding of the world and their cultural milieu, and couple their knowledge with developing skills that will help them thrive and be productive in their post-graduate pursuits.  

SIL students work with career teachers who are passionate about their vocation and devout in their academic discipline. Our long-tenured instructors will challenge students to surpass the bounds of what they think they can do, while providing guidance and mentorship along the way. We see the classroom as a collaboration between teacher and student - allowing students to explore questions, make new connections, and demonstrate authentic understanding through synthesis.

Students choose SIL for many reasons. Flexible, college-style schedules and the enormous variety of UC approved a-g courses offered are only the tip of the iceberg. In the 1:1 and small group setting, we build a personalized calendar for each student. Pupils generally meet 2-3 times per week per course, though that changes with the student’s availability, goals, and deadlines. There is no minimum number of hours of instruction required to complete a course. Rather a student finishes a course by satisfying the requirements of the curriculum, hence the “Mastery Learning” designation. Exams happen outside of scheduled class time (except speaking portions of language exams) when the student and teacher believe the student is ready to address the material.

At graduation, SIL Students are prepared to continue their education at the collegiate level and in their profession of choice. Our graduates are pursuing degrees from the Ivy Leagues, to small liberal arts colleges, to top research universities.
